Blue Devils Charity Fun Day Highlights!

On Saturday, May 15, 2010, the BGBA had an event at Longfields Davidson Heights High School to celebrate a long and successful season. But more importantly, the kids got together to raise money for the Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa.

With the assistance of many of our coaching staff, the girls competed for prizes by going through some fun, innovative, skill events and enjoyed a BBQ plus the traditional slide show. The gymnasium was an exciting place to be with the music going and the bleachers packed with Moms, Dads, and siblings cheering on the players.

Pierre Lagalisse, the Director of Fund Development for the Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa, was on hand to accept a donation from the BGBA in the amount of $2,307.85. Well done girls!!

This event could never have happened without lots of help. Led by Jim Tebrake and his committee of Julie Beaucaire, Carli Kennedy, Sandra Forzley, and Paul and Tammy Dufresne, this was a proud moment to be part of the Blue Devil family.

Kevin Lemenchick, President BGBA.

Blue Devils Fun and Charity Day!

The response to the Charity Classic has been excellent. We currently have around 250 people who have indicated they are coming to the event. While we understand that some of the players may be disappointed that we are not having our traditional banquet this year we were hoping that you might explain to them that as a club we feel very privileged to offer a basketball program for the girls in our community. Unfortunately, some families cannot afford to register their daughters. This year the club has decided that we would like to do something about this by raising funds for a local charity. We have chosen the Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa as our charity. All the funds that we raise will go to their girl’s basketball program. The program ensures that girls who cannot afford to play basketball are provided the opportunity to do so. We thought this was an appropriate choice since this is the last year we will be a girls only club. Attached you will find both the sponsor sheet and a letter from the Boys and Girls club.

Blue Devils in the News

Charlotte Daze, of the Barrhaven Girls Basketball Association, recently won the 11 year old girls division at the Regional round ( Ottawa and the Valley) of the 2010 Knights of Columbus Free-Throw Championship. The third round of this contest was held at St. Paul's High School. Charlotte is pictured accepting her first-place trophy from officials representing the Knights of Columbus.

Merger Information

News From Kevin Lemenchick, BGBA President, re: Merger

On behalf of the Barrhaven Girls Basketball Association Executive, it is my great pleasure to announce a merger of three local basketball associations. The Nepean Amateur Basketball Association, the Nepean Bobcats, and the Barrhaven Girls Basketball Association have partnered to form the Nepean Blue Devils Basketball Association. This news is exciting for the growth of youth boys and girls basketball in the Nepean area within the City of Ottawa.

Through this link, we will keep you up to date on the latest news regarding the new association. As you know, a successful sports club requires many hands, so if you are interested in volunteering in any way, feel free to email me at president@bgba.ca.

Sincerely, Kevin Lemenchick President, BGBA

Midget Girls Win Gold at Cats 2010 Tournament

Congratulations to our Captains(Maggie Walsh, Lindsay Kavanagh, Ally Lemenchick, Emily Whitton) who led our team to a very successful weekend ON and OFF the court. Off the court the team got to know each other better and a good bond has been established that will grow with our season. On the court, we accomplished many team and individual goals that helped us perform. In pool play we beat Cornwall 62-19 and Elgin 61-20. On Saturday night we played Gloucester in the quarter -final and totally controlled the game to a 55- 21 victory. The Semi-final game was against the host club, Kingston Cats. It was a physical game, our self-discipline and focus were tested. We prevailed with a 58-46 result. In the Final, we were up against a Brockville team that beat us the weekend before by 22 points. A close battle, with two teams that kept coming at each other. We won the game 43 - 38, in a hard fought, intense contest. Well deserved Ladies.

Special Volunteer Recognitions

The BGBA said good-bye to to some of their best and most trusted volunteers at the annual banquet on May 22, 2009.  The following people were recognized for their outstanding service for the past few years:

Susan Whitton - Registrar has been the BGBA registrar for the past three years and has truly put our registration processes where they need to be.  She has liaised with all of our coaches as well as Basketball Ontario in an effort to get things done correctly and on time.

Sandy Pearce - Recreation League Coordinator - coached in the BGBA for 4 years and then took on the role of Recreation League coordinator for the past two seasons.  He, too, took an unchartered role and made it his own.  From dealing with irate coaches, parents and other teams, he always kept his wits about him and made firm, fair and consistent decisions.

Dyann Bernard has served various roles for the past 10 years.  Her input, consistency and dedication to the board and your daughters is a true testament to her character as a person.

Deb Morris - President for the past 15 years.  In addition to her role in the BGBA as President, Treasurer, and web-master, Deb also served on the Basketball Ontario Board of Directors for 4 years, 2 years as Vice-President.  She was also chair and member of the Basketball Ontario Provincial Advisory Committee and has been instrumental facilitating and structuring the Eastern Ontario Basketball Association.
