
President's Award
In 2006, The President's award was established by the Barrhaven Girls Basketball Association to encourage our players to continue with post secondary studies.
This bursary, in the amount of $500.00 is awarded to 2 BGBA players who are under the age of 21, and have applied to attend the first year in a post secondary institution in the fall. The award recipients are chosen on merits relating to their academic standing, contributions to the community, and their involvement with BGBA.
2009 Recipients:
SHAUNA DAVIS has played with the Barrhaven Blue Devils for the past 8 years. She has also been coaching for the past 4 years in the BGBA as well as teaching basketball skills to grade 2 students at St. Andrew’s elementary school.
At St. Joseph Catholic High School, she played for her school basketball team. She is currently a member of her graduation committee as well as the Ontario Students Against Impaired Driving. She plans to study Early Childhood Education at Algonquin in the fall and then complete her studies at Carleton University with the hope of entering teachers college and pursue her dream of becoming an elementary school teacher.
She says that during her time with the BGBA, she has learned to always give 100% and, as a result, feels ready to face the challenges that she will face in the future.
ASHTON STUDER has played with the Barrhaven Blue Devils for the past 6 years.
At St. Joseph Catholic High School, she played for her school basketball team. She was also involved in the recreation leadership program, Hoops for Heart basketball and Peace Day activities for elementary school children.
She has been accepted in the Bachelor of Arts Honours program at Carleton University where she would like to eventually pursue a law degree.
She states that during her time with the BGBA, she has learned to a lot about herself as a player and how to develop her skills as a player. She hopes that basketball remains in her life for many years to come.
